Proper nutrition plays a key role in all stages of in vitro fertilization (IVF). It helps prepare a woman’s body for conception, maintains hormonal balance, and increases the likelihood of successful embryo implantation. This article provides basic recommendations for your diet before starting the program, during stimulation, and taking into account the selected IVF protocol.
Preparatory stage: nutrition before starting the protocol
Before starting IVF, your diet should be aimed at saturating the body with vitamins and minerals necessary for the proper functioning of the reproductive system and the formation of a healthy fetus.
Particular attention should be paid to foods containing:
- folic acid (spinach, broccoli, legumes);
- iodine (seafood, seaweed);
- vitamin D (eggs, fatty fish, sun exposure);
- potassium (bananas, avocados);
- vitamin E (nuts, vegetable oils);
- calcium (dairy products, broccoli);
- B vitamins (whole grains, liver, eggs).
Diet during stimulation and embryo transfer
During ovulation stimulation and preparation for embryo transfer, your diet should take into account the hormonal load and the body’s increased needs.
Weight loss is not recommended during this period: if weight loss is necessary, it is better to plan it before starting the protocol.
Protein foods form the basis of the diet. They help reduce the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and promote cell growth. Suitable sources include chicken, turkey, lean fish, eggs, and cottage cheese. Animal proteins should make up 60–70% of the total protein intake.
To prevent glucose spikes and metabolic disorders, it is recommended to limit:
- sweets;
- pastries and muffins;
- sweet fruits (e.g., raisins, bananas, dates).
Moderate amounts of complex carbohydrates are allowed: whole grains, vegetables.
Fats are also important, but in moderation — about 20 g per day. Main sources: vegetable oils, fatty sea fish.
Avoid:
- salty foods (to prevent fluid retention);
- caffeinated beverages (coffee, black tea, energy drinks).
It is recommended to drink at least 30 ml of clean water per 1 kg of body weight per day.
Regular consumption of fiber in the form of fresh fruits and vegetables helps normalize digestion, especially during the recovery period after puncture.
Nutrition depending on the IVF protocol
Dietary recommendations may vary depending on the IVF technique used.
Classic IVF (own eggs) The priority is foods that stimulate ovarian function: protein foods, antioxidants (berries, greens), and sufficient amounts of healthy fats.
IVF with donor eggs The main goal is to prepare the endometrium. The diet should include foods that improve hormonal balance and vascular health: green vegetables, nuts, avocados, and fatty fish.
IVF with double donation For maximum support, the diet should be enriched with:
- B vitamins;
- magnesium;
- vitamins D and E;
- sufficient fluids.
